PoE Compatibility Notice for UniFi PoE Switches

Overview

We have identified that some UniFi PoE switches support both standard IEEE 802.3af/at PoE and 24V Passive PoE on certain ports.

Improper PoE mode configuration may cause damage to standard PoE devices.

SUNBA PoE cameras are designed to operate with IEEE 802.3af / 802.3at-compliant PoE power sourcing equipment.

Important Compatibility Note

Some UniFi PoE switches provide multiple PoE output modes per port:

PoE Mode	Description
802.3af	Standard PoE
802.3at	PoE+
24V Passive	Passive PoE (No detection)
Off	No PoE

24V Passive PoE is NOT standard PoE.

Passive PoE outputs voltage directly to the Ethernet cable without PoE detection and classification.

If a port is configured to 24V Passive PoE, it may damage standard PoE devices, including PoE cameras.

Why Damage Can Occur

Standard PoE devices follow this power-up sequence:

Detection → Classification → Power On → Device Start

Passive PoE skips the detection process:

Power On Immediately → Possible Damage

In addition, some PoE switches output voltage up to 50–57V, and PTZ cameras may draw higher inrush current during startup, which can stress the PoE power circuit if the power source is not properly configured.

Recommended Configuration for UniFi Switch

Please ensure the UniFi PoE port is configured as:

PoE Mode: 802.3af or 802.3at
DO NOT use: 24V Passive PoE

Recommended Network Design for PTZ Cameras

For PTZ cameras, we recommend:

• Managed PoE switch with IEEE 802.3at (PoE+)
• PoE power budget sufficient for PTZ startup
• PoE watchdog or remote PoE port reboot function (optional)
• Surge protection for outdoor installations
• Shielded Cat5e/Cat6 cable for long-distance outdoor runs

For reliable and safe operation, please ensure the PoE switch is configured in standard PoE mode, not Passive PoE mode.
